NIGHT AT THE RACES: Holy Family Parish, 828 Main St., Sugar Notch, will hold its annual autumn night at the races on Saturday, Nov. 5, in the church hall. Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner is at 5:30 and post time is at 6:30.

The suspected overdose death of a Wilkes-Barre woman prompted a rescue mission that made national headlines last week when three Pennsylvania residents attempted to enter New York City with an arsenal of weapons. Mandy Powell, 38, of Glen Lyon, confirmed her daughter, Sierra Schmitt, 20, died last Monday in Brooklyn, prompting the bizarre attempt at vigilante justice.

A Nanticoke man who traveled to a Glen Lyon residence to have sex with a 15-year-old boy will spend at least five years in state prison. Richard Perugino, 61, of 1361 Hanover St., will serve five to 10 years in prison, Luzerne County Judge Tina Polachek Gartley ruled.

There is plenty of parking at the old Stegmaier building along Wilkes-Barre Boulevard in Wilkes-Barre, but ever since the developer started charging $3 to park, folks are avoiding the lot and parking on the street. The entrance to the parking lot is on North Welles Street.
